How to Export ChatGPT Conversations (Full History or One Chat)

Two different things called "export"

When people search for how to export a ChatGPT conversation, they usually want one of two things — and ChatGPT only has a built-in tool for the first one.

• A backup of everything. Your whole account history in one archive, for safekeeping or before closing an account. This is what the official data export does.
• One conversation as a document. A single chat you want to send to a colleague, attach to a report or keep in your notes — with its tables, code and formulas readable. The official export does not do this.

Method 1: Export your full history with the official data export

1. In ChatGPT, open your profile menu and choose Settings.
2. Go to Data controls and click Export next to Export data.
3. Confirm the export. ChatGPT prepares the archive in the background.
4. When it is ready, you receive an email with a download link. Click it while signed in to the same account.
5. Download the ZIP file before the link expires — it is valid for 24 hours.

The data export is available on Free, Plus and Pro accounts, but not inside Team or Business workspaces. Chats you have already deleted are not included.

What is inside the ZIP

You get chat.html, a single page listing every conversation, and conversations.json, the raw data. Both are complete, but neither is a document you would hand to anyone: tables show up as plain text, LaTeX stays as source code, and finding one chat means scrolling through all of them.

Method 2: Export a single conversation to Word, PDF or Markdown

For one chat, skip the archive and export straight from the conversation page.

1. Install the TODOC extension from the Chrome Web Store. It also works in Edge, Brave and Arc.
2. Open the conversation on chatgpt.com.
3. Click the export button that appears next to the chat and pick a format.
4. The file downloads immediately — no email, no waiting, no expiring link.

Because the extension reads the original Markdown rather than the rendered page, headings become real Word headings, tables become real tables, and equations become editable Word equations. PDF keeps the same layout for sharing, and Markdown drops straight into Obsidian or Notion.

Would rather not install anything? Click the copy button under a ChatGPT answer, paste it into the TODOC editor and export from there.

Method 3: Export several conversations at once

The official export is all-or-nothing. If you need, say, the ten chats from one project, batch export is faster than digging through chat.html.

1. Open the TODOC panel on chatgpt.com and switch to batch mode.
2. Wait for the conversation list to finish loading.
3. Tick the conversations you want, or select all.
4. Pick a format and start the export.

Which method should you use?

• Backing up everything, or leaving ChatGPT: the official data export.
• Sharing or filing one conversation: export that chat to Word or PDF.
• Moving chats into a notes app: Markdown export — exporting a single reply to Markdown is free with no daily limit.
• A handful of related chats: batch export.
